Galle had been a prominent seaport long before western rule in the country. Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Malays, Indians, and Chinese were doing business through Galle port. In 1411. The "modern" history of Galle starts in 1502, when a small fleet of Portuguese ships, under the command of Lourenço de Almeida, on their way to the Maldives, were blown off course by a storm. Realising that the king resided in Kotte close to Colombo Lourenço proceeded there after a brief stop in Galle. In 1640, the Portuguese had to surrender to the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch built the present fort in the year 1663. They built a fortified wall, using solid granite, and built three bastions, known as "Sun", "Moon" and "Star". After the British...

The clock tower in the Village of Nimborio, the only settlement on the beautiful Greek Island of Halki (Chalki). The residents of Tarpon Springs, Florida, USA (descendants of Halki sponge divers who were forced to relocate when the sponge diving around Halki became unprofitable) endowed Halki with money for the stone clock tower. Unfortunately, it does not work any more. Halki is a small, charming island, part of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands, situated opposite the west coast of the Island of Rhodes. The Clock Tower is the world's largest four-faced, chiming clock. The structure is situated at the north-eastern end of the Houses of Parliament building in Westminster, London, England. The Clock Tower of the magnificent Town House in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, taken from the banks of the Union Canal, a little bit East from the Railway station. Built in 1668-70 to replace the original tolbooth, demolished on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Altered over the years, it now accommodates the Burgh Halls (including the Council Chamber of the former Linlithgow Town Council) and the local Visitor Awareness Centre. Incidently, Linlithgow is the town where I was born. I lived there until I married. When I was much younger, my friends and I would go to the “Dancing” in the Town House on a Saturday night. In the centre of the small village of Birnam, Perthshire, Scotland, is St Mary’s Church, complete with its clock tower. The church was built in 1858 and is set in its own well cared for churchyard. The clock tower was added in 1883. Windows in the church are by a number of different designers, including William Morris. Situated on the banks of the River Tay, the conservation village of Birnam is home to the Birnam Oak, the last remaining example of Birnam Wood so famous from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. An early morning view across the village of Nimborio on the Greek Island of Halki. The sun had just risen behind me and the mountain was glowing in the early morning light. In the centre of the shot is the broken clock tower. The residents of Tarpon Springs, Florida, USA (descendants of Halki sponge divers who were forced to relocate when the sponge diving around Halki became unprofitable) endowed Halki with money for the stone clock tower. Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower

The view from just inside the Louise Carnegie Gates of Pittencrieff Park, looking back up the High Street in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. The skyline is dominated by the tower of Dunfermline City Chambers. This building was historically designed to be the centre of local government in Dunfermline. In more recent times most of these functions have been devolved to other locations, but [as of 2008] the impressive edifice still houses the Council Chambers, the Burgh Court and Dunfermline's Registrar Office. The building, constructed in the period 1875-79, was created by James C Walker who also designed the first Carnegie Library. It employs a harmonious composite of French, Gothic and Scots baronial architectural styles.

The former Guildhall (now the Town Hall) in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland (the northernmost town in England). Completed in 1754, it is possibly the town's most handsome building, facing and dominating broad Marygate. Of rich brown stone in a Classical design, it has a grand portico with giant Tuscan columns and a tall spire. The bells in the Town Hall are used to summon people to the church services at Holy Trinity Church which has no steeple, tower or church bell. It is no wonder that many visitors to Berwick mistake the Town Hall for the parish church. the Town Hall Bells also still ring the curfew at 8 o'clock every evening. The top floor used to be a jail and prisoners were aired on the balcony round the roof.

The 316 foot high Clock Tower is the world's largest four-faced, chiming clock. The structure completed between 1858-59 is situated at the north-eastern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. It is often colloquially referred to as Big Ben, which is actually the nickname of the main bell housed within the tower (formally known as the Great Bell). The bell weighing over 13 tons, was cast in 1858 at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in East London. To this day one of the largest bells they have ever cast. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry also cast the Liberty Bell, along with hand bells, tower bells, clock bells, carillons, and turret bells for all over the world.
