Remembering the wonderful Hess Department Store. Hess's was a department store chain based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The company started in 1897 with one store, originally known as Hess Brothers, and grew to nearly 80 stores by its peak in the late 1980s.  It was a shopping mecca known around the world for its quality merchandise. The store's motto was "be best, be first, be entertaining". The Patio, the store's restaurant, was renowned for its famous strawberry pie.

Known by its slogan, "America's Best Buy In Recorded Music", Springboard was founded in New Jersey in December, 1968 and was one of the most active budget labels during the 1970s. Initially operating as a subsidiary of Springboard International Records, Inc., in 1974 it acquired parts of the Scepter Records catalog from its founder, Florence Greenberg. In 1976, it acquired Musicor Records from its owner Art Talmadge. As a result, it routinely issued cut-rate compilations culled from the Scepter and Musicor catalogs as well as "Top of the Pops"-style Top 40 sound-a-like cover-version records, both of which were sold in K-Mart and other popular department stores.

Carson Pirie Scott & Co. (CSP) was an American department store founded in 1854, which grew to over 50 locations, primarily in the Midwest. The chain began in 1854 when Samuel Carson and John Thomas Pirie first clerked in Murray's Dry Goods in Peru, Illinois, then opened their own store in LaSalle, followed by one in Amboy. John Edwin Scott ran a dry goods store in Ottawa, Illinois, and later moved up to Chicago as a partner in creating CSP. When Schlesinger & Mayer went bankrupt in 1904, CSP bought their store at 1 South State Street on the corner of East Madison in 1904. The grand building would become CSP's flagship store for 114 years until the CSP closed down in 2018.

Gold Circle Department Store

Fisher's Big Wheel was a discount department store chain. It was formed in 1939 following the consolidation of the Fisher Dry Goods company and a hardware store called Big Wheel. Fisher's Big Wheel was primarily located in smaller towns which were not already served by other discount retailers. At its peak, the chain comprised more than 100 stores in 8 states. The chain declared bankruptcy in 1993, selling some stores and closing others. Fisher's Big Wheel closed in 1994.

Chappell's was a family-owned department store chain based in Syracuse, New York. It opened in 1896 and remained in business until 1994. At its peak, it operated ten stores in the Syracuse area, Cortland, Watertown and Massena. In no particular order, malls that had a Chappell's store included Great Northern Mall (Clay, NY); Western Lights Plaza (Valley area of Syracuse, NY); Northern Lights (Mattydale, NY); Shoppingtown Mall (Dewitt, NY); Penn-Can Mall (Cicero, NY); Carousel Center (known as Destiny USA after 2012 in Syracuse, NY); Shop City Plaza (Syracuse, NY); Fingerlakes Mall (Auburn, NY); Seneca Mall (Liverpool, NY); Salmon Run Mall (Watertown, NY). There was also a stand alone store in downtown Syracuse.

Idanha-Detroit RFPD is a volunteer fire district within the cities of Idanha and Detroit in Oregon, providing fire protection, emergency medical services, vehicle rescue, and public education services since 1960.

I used to go with my Mom to Altman's as a kid to shop regularly. What a dazzling shopping experience!

In 1865, William G. Herpolsheimer and Charles G. A. Voigt, two young businessmen, established the Voigt, Herpolsheimer & Company, a dry goods and carpet store in Michigan City, Indiana. The partners would eventually relocate to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1870 where they would really make a name for themselves. The partnership between Voigt and Herpolsheimer ended in 1902 with Voigt taking over the flour mills they owned, and Herpolsheimer taking control of the store. Changing the name to Herpolsheimer's, William was quick to reimagine the store as an upscale shopping experience more like those found in Manhattan, stocking the latest fashions, gorgeous window displays, french chandeliers, and even an authentic tearoom.
