Description: Maplin Electronics Supply was founded in 1972 by Roger Allen and Doug Simmons who were frustrated by the difficulty they had in obtaining components for their home electronic projects. They started up a mail-order business in Doug's attic in Rayleigh, Essex, England, producing a catalog of electronic components from which fellow enthusiasts could order an endless number of parts and pieces. The business soon expanded beyond mail order when the guys opened their first retail store in 1976. This design is based on Maplin's futuristic style logo that came into play in the late '70s and complemented the sci-fi and fantasy artwork that adorned their catalogs.

With the joint efforts of Coby Electronics Co. of Hong Kong and Coby Electronics Corp. of the United States, the products reached consumers in Asia, North America, South America and Europe; however, the company mostly sold in Europe and the United States. Coby also served as an OEM manufacturer for brands including Samsung, NEC, RadioShack's Presidian brand and Hyundai. Coby formerly provided OEM manufacturing for Daewoo before it became defunct. Description: Incredible Universe was the name of a chain of consumer electronics stores in the early to mid '90s that were a joint venture between Tandy Corporation and Trans World Entertainment. A typical store was 185,000 square feet of sales floor and warehouse, stocking around 85,000 items. The store's borrowed philosophies from theme parks with retail departments being "scenes," employees were "cast members," customers were "guests,"and so forth. The stores featured a large rotunda area with a stage where sales presentations, product demonstrations, autograph signings, and musical acts could perform. Retail departments (software, music and video, and accessories) were accessible from the rotunda, making it a hub of sorts for the store.

The name "Zenith" came from ZN'th, a contraction of its founders' ham radio call sign, 9ZN. They were joined in 1921 by Eugene F. McDonald, and Zenith Radio Company was formally incorporated in 1923. The fledgling company soon became known for its high-quality radios and electronic innovations. Zenith introduced the first portable radio in 1924 and would go on to innovate and define the home television market. Zenith pioneered high-contrast, flat-face picture tubes, and the multichannel television sound (MTS) stereo system, and was one of the first companies to introduce a digital HDTV system.
