Born in Miami Gardens, Florida in 1979, he was raised by a single mother in Carol City, a rough neighborhood. His father was a musician who encouraged him to express himself through music. Flo Rida found local success as a teenager rapping with the group Groundhoggz. He later worked with DeVante Swing, formerly of Jodeci, in Los Angeles.
