Landsat 9 is an Earth observation satellite launched on 27 September 2021 from Space Launch Complex-3E at Vandenberg Space Force Base on an Atlas V 401 launch vehicle.

The Shoshone River runs from bottom left, meeting the Bighorn near top right. The northern (upper) bank of the Shoshone has a large aggregate of irrigated fields (blue/purple). At bottom right the line of Dry Creek is seen, with a smaller aggregate of fields just right of bottom centre. The banded rock formations appear multicoloured, and are particularly clear. This image was made by the Thematic Mapper of a Landsat satellite in 1991.

Mouth of the Mississippi river, Landsat 7 satellite image. Draining much of North America, the Mississippi carries large quantities of sediment into the Gulf of Mexico and along the coast of Louisiana (light blue areas). Modern farming techniques mean much of this sediment contains phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilisers. These nutrient-rich effluents cause an explosion in the summer population of phytoplankton. When they die, the bacteria responsible for decomposition absorb oxygen in the water leading to a 'dead zone' on the ocean floor where few animals can live. Autumnal storms stir the water and clear the dead zone until the following year. Photographed in 1999.

Marine phytoplankton bloom. Satellite image of a large green bloom of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. Every summer, the nutrient-rich, cooler waters of the northern basins of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans promote more growth among marine plants and phytoplankton than is found in tropical waters. This produces massive blooms of phytoplankton that spread across hundreds and sometimes thousands of kilometres. Blooms off Scandinavia in the summer of 2018 were particularly intense. Imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on NASA's Landsat 8 satellite, on 18th July 2018.
