Description: Lavabit was an email service founded in 2004 that employed a combination of asymmetric encryption and SSL/TLS to provide private, secure communication with extreme levels of security for registered users. Lavabit shut down in 2013 after the U.S. government demanded access to its Transport Layer Security (TLS) keys to spy on users by accessing their emails. To avoid complicity in violating customer privacy and the Constitution, Lavabit chose to shut down. The service deleted the keys and joined others to form the Dark Mail Alliance, to develop the Dark Internet Mail Environment (DIME), a secure communication platform for asynchronous secure messaging across the Internet.
