"It's Grim Up North" is a song by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The JAMs). The lyrics list towns and cities in the North of England, set to a pounding industrial techno beat and percussion reminiscent of steam whistles. The 1991 version segues into an orchestral instrumental of the hymn "Jerusalem". A recurring theme of "It's Grim Up North" was drab greyness, representing the dreary, overcast skies of the "grim" North.

This panoramic view can be found at the Northern end of the Roaches, on the edge of the Peak District national park in England. I was on one of my multi day walks, and had taken a train to Macclesfield to climb some outlying peaks before reaching the gritstone ridge of the Roaches. Just to the South they form quite a barrier of rugged eroded shapes, but at this end they are breached by a road before tailing off into farmland. Just to the right there are woods, and somewhere hidden away is a little rock gorge know as Ludds church - so called as it became a place to pray away from persecution. The following day I crossed moorland to reach the town of Buxton. Painted in oil on a 20x8 inch board
