I figured the 'highly luminous blue-spotted pattern' of the mudskipper ~ had to serve some purpose right...? These highly flamboyant and communicative species seem to be always displaying to one another, either jumping up off the mud to catch eye of a female or flagging their dorsal fin in the air ~ signalling almost as like a pantomime dame would do ~ flapping a handkerchief in the air and cooing 'cooee look at me' !!! It turns out that these 'luminous spots' serve a purpose and makes them visible even in the dark...
