The Middletown Mansfields were an early baseball team in Middletown, Connecticut that existed from 1866 to 1872. In the summer of 1866, a ballclub was established at Middletown's Douglas Pump Company by the factory owner's son, sixteen-year-old Ben Douglas Jr. Douglas named the team after his great-uncle General Joseph Mansfield, a Middletown native and Civil War hero. That year, they lost their first match to the Lincoln club of New Britain by a score of 50-1, but steadily improved thereafter; in 1869, Mansfield put up a 8-2 record, all against other Connecticut clubs.

Samuel "Sam" Sharpe, or Sharp, National Hero of Jamaica (1801 – 23 May 1832), was the slave leader behind the widespread Jamaican Baptist War slave rebellion of 1832 (also known as the Christmas Rebellion). Sharpe was born in the parish of St James, Jamaica. Although he was a slave most of his life, he was allowed to become well-educated. Because of his education, he was respected by other slaves, and he became a well-known preacher and leader. He was a deacon at the Burchell Baptist Church in Montego Bay, whose pastor was Rev. Nanny was born in Ghana and is said to have been from the Ashanti region which is known for it’s strong matriarchal tradition and courageous female warriors and leaders.
