Newbury Magnets

An artistic rendition from my original photograph of houses by the Kennet and Avon Canal in Newbury, Berkshire. The canal is approaching the town from the west, the scene being captured from its West Mills bank. This was oce the centre of the town's textile and agricultural industries with warehouses, workshops and mills lining the banks. From here the canal makes its way to Reading and the River Thames and eventually London from where woollen cloth could be exported throughout the world.

On the right is the site of West Mills reminding us that Newbury was a centre for agriculture and for textile manufacture. Newbury, the administrative centre of West Berkshire, was, in medieval times, famous as a centre for making woollen cloth. The canal was opened between Reading and Bristol in 1810, providing a smooth route between the Bristol Channel and London.

An impressionistic image of the Kennet and Avon Canal as it approaches the town centre at Newbury in West Berkshire. This was once a centre of the woollen cloth trade and next to the canal bank here are the old weavers' cottages. Further on, through the swing bridge at West Mills the waterway glides through the middle of the town to head eastwards to Reading and the River Thames. The was built between 1794 and 1810 to enable goods to be smoothly transported between Bristol and London.

The Kennet and Avon Canal seen from the historic site of West Mills in Newbury, Berkshire, England. In times past this was a hive of activity with the mills drawing their power from the River Kennet. Several wiers and sluices show where they once were. The Kennet and Avon Canal, constructed in the early 1700s to connect Bristol and London via Reading, would have been the means of transporting the mills' raw materials and end products. Now. after restoration in the later 1900s, it is busy with leisure boats.

The Weavers Cottages stand on the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal in Newbury, Berkshire, just upstream from West Mills. Newbury was once famous for its cloth making with both the wool and finished product being transported along the canal by narrow boat.

The Town Bridge, or as it is known locally, The Water Bridge, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Newbury in Berkshire, England. The River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury in the early 1700s under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, work commencing in 1718. It was extended further west to Hungerford in 1798. The bridge probably dates from this period. The canal was finally opened to connect with Bristol in 1810.

The Town Lock at Newbury in West Berkshire on a sunny autumn day. This is the view as you join the towpath on the western side of Town Bridge (or The Water Bridge). Here the Kennet divides, the left fork heading to the old West Mills (now housing) whilst steer right to take you through the lock and onwards towards Bath and Bristol. The lock itself dates from 1796 and is Grade 2 listed. It has a rise/fall of 3ft 6in (0.07m).

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it makes its way westwards out of Newbury in West Berkshire. Here it joins with the River Kennet which at one time provided the water to power the corn and woollen mills along here. Newbury was renowned for its woollen industry and just ahead here is a row of weavers' cottages from the earlier days of cottage industry. The canal was used to transport wool, woollen goods as well as other commodities east to London via the Thames or west to Bath and Bristol.

Peaceful now, this was once a hive of activity with corn mills using the river's water to turn their waterwheels. The mill here was bought by Hovis in 1921 and was eventually sold in the 1950s. The tall building opposite was once the granary. On the right is the swing bridge over the navigation leading to the lock and town centre.To the left are the mill 's sluice gates.

The old weavers' cottages stand by the towpath of the Kennet and Avon canal in Newbury, West Berkshire. During the Middle Ages Newbury was noted for its cloth trade but this diminished rapidly in the late C16th and more so after the Civil War. Being on the Kennet Navigation (opened in 1723) towards London meant that cloth could be transported easily to the Capital via Reading. The canal, seen here, from Newbury to Bath and the port of Bristol was opened in 1796.

The scene as the Kennet and Avon Canal approaches the western end of Newbury in West Berkshire. This area, West Mills, was once a hive of activity where wool and woollen products were loaded and unloaded to and from canal boats to be transported to London via the Thames at Reading or to Bristol and its docks to be exported abroad. Now warehouses and workshops have been reaplaced by or converted into flats and houses and the boats are for leisure.

A narrowboat on the River Kennet moored just above the town lock at Newbury, West Berkshire. This is the West Mills area, so called because once there were corn mills here - the sluices for them are on the left of the image. The mills were owned by Hovis from 1921 until the 1950s. Further on and past the swing bridge, the Kennet Navigation as it is properly called, becomes the Kennet and Avon Canal, taking us all the way to Bristol.

The gatehouse of Donnington Castle near Newbury, West Berkshire seen from an adjacent footpath. The castle was constructed in 1386 by Sir Richard Abberbury the Elder. It was eventually destroyed following a siege by the Parliamentarian troops during the Civil War having been held by Royalist forces. It was then 'slighted'- ie dismantled to prevent further use - with only the gatehouse left standing.

This image was captured late on a sunny February afternoon as the sun was beginning to go down. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames. It fell into disuse but has been completely restored and was reopened in 1990.
