With his bright white cravat evoking a stylish old Elizabethan charm, this handsome bibbed domestic Mallard (of the Duclair designer "persuasion") was definitely the odd duck out at the local wildlife sanctuary. That didn't stop him from charming the photographers in his midst, and moving his way to the forefront of the feeding frenzy that included many, many wild Mallards.

An early morning low tide at the White Rock Pier enabled me to capture this Surf Scoter seaduck feasting on exposed barnacles and mussels that coat the bottoms of exposed pilings in early November 2021.

Fall migration brings thousands and thousands of Snow Geese to the shores of Metro Vancouver every year, and 2017 produced a bumper crop of these migratory birds -- a stunning spectacle to witness. Among the vibrant and calling sea of white that seemed to blanket the high tides from dawn to dusk, outnumbering the usually omnipresent and overwhelming numbers of gulls, crows, and wintering ducks at this time of the year, we also saw 5 rare blue morph Snow Geese. My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a forest clearing... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst.

Logging Tools is a sepia tone photographic art print of logging tools located at the Issaquah Railroad Depot Museum. Issaquah, Washington, situated at the base of the Cascade Mountain Range east of Seattle, was an important stop along the rail line for timber shipping.

Owls are such fascinating creatures. They are front page newsmakers, drawing the interest of birders, nature lovers, and just about everyone else who has a pulse. Snowy Owls are especially charismatic; the largest owls in North America only show up in Metro Vancouver every few years, and their appearance during our winters causes crowds of admirers to form and flock.

An unusually late-staying migrant dressed in his best breeding finery, this Ruddy Turnstone was attracting wildlife photographers with his foraging techniques (lifting clumps of seaweed much bigger (and probably heavier) than himself) on the shore, and in the process of scrounging up a late lunch, walking right into the midst of the long-lens-toting paparazzi, who were often forced to back up! Photographed at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty in November 2015.

With their long, bright red bills, yellow eyes, and pink feet, Black Oystercatchers are one of the most intriguing looking birds I've had the opportunity of photographing. Usually, they aren't very finicky about the company they keep (human or bird), and can generally be counted upon to deliver a few impressive cameos.

My introduction to the Satyr Comma / Anglewing. Apparently these little, bright orange butterflies are supposed to be skittish, but don't tell this beauty that... it posed for several shots on a blade of marsh vegetation. Photographed at the Campbell Valley Regional Park in Langley.

One of our resident adult male Anna's hummingbirds who needed the "reassurance" of the feistier Rufous hummingbirds to (finally) come and sit on one of the old plum tree branches a few feet away and indulge the photographer in a few closeups.

Who, me? This American Red Squirrel (one of many we would encounter!) put on an energetic (and vocal) show and dance for me at the friends of a friends' cottage over the 150th Canada Day long weekend in early July 2017. The moment he realized that a long lens was trained on him, however, he was the picture of innocence, and struck this pose. He was the odd man man with the regular songbirds at the seed feeders. Curiously, he didn't climb the suet feeder while I was there (although he could have chosen to), but ate from the fallen seed on the ground.

Perfectly reflected in the tranquil waters of this pond is this Northern Pintail drake. They may be most commonly seen in West Coast winters, but I've encountered these ducks almost all year round at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

By mid-May 2016, the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island had already hosted 10 fledged Barn Swallows! I can usually find at least a couple of them who like to hang around the Warming Hut, as curious about the photographers behind the long lenses as we are about them. Always a pleasure to make the acquaintance of these colourful and cosmopolitan aerialists!

I encountered a party of eight juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area as September 2018 passed its halfway mark. Like the other shorebirds who normally prefer the grassier, less muddy parts of the beach to forage from, these medium-sized migratory shorebirds did not mind me in their midst. Photographed on a sunny and slightly breezy afternoon on a fairly low high tide that let me walk out a few hundred feet from shore to observe the visiting fauna in close quarters.

The sudden appearance of three Bald Eagles--working the waters of Boundary Bay Regional Park--sends thousands of American Wigeons (and the odd Northern Pintail) into the sunny but chilly late November skies.

On this trip to Oregon I really didn't have anything planned out. I wanted to go inland, but after stopping at a few lighthouses along the Northern Coast I decided to just travel down the coast and see all the lighthouses that I could. This is Cape Argo Lighthouse.

A Short-Eared Owl surveys its hunting grounds for opportunistic Northern Harriers who would not hesitate to take advantage of the fruit of its hunting prowess. Sudden gusts of wind fluff this hunter's head feathers, revealing the short ear tufts for which this owl is named.
