The 118-pound contest was for the vacant World Boxing Council bantamweight championship, following reigning champion Lupe Pintor's enforced absence after an automobile accident. Dávila, a highly experienced contender, was making his fourth attempt to capture a world title, while the 20-year-old Bejines entered as one of the division's highly ranked challengers. Scheduled for 12 rounds, the bout represented an important opportunity for both men to establish themselves at the top of the bantamweight division.
