Normal retina, ophthalmoscope image. The retina is the light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eye. Blood vessels (red) radiate out from the optic disc (yellow, left). The optic disc is the area where the optic nerve and blood vessels enter the eye. Due to this, it has no light- sensitive cells, and is the cause of the blind spot. The dark red area at centre is the macula. This is the region of the retina with the highest concentration of light-sensitive cells, and is responsible for the sharp vision at the centre of the visual field.

A blood vessel runs from left to right, and numerous other branches are seen. The tissue has been tagged with fluorescent markers specific to certain proteins. Retina of the eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a section through the retina of an eye, showing cone and rod cells. Cone cells and the more numerous rod cells are specialised light-sensitive cells (photoreceptors) that occur on the surface of the retina. They are responsible for detecting visible images, which are transmitted as nerve impulses to the optic nerve and the brain. There are about 130 million rod cells in the human retina, which detect light intensity and so are important for day and night vision. The less numerous cone-like cone cells (about 6.5 million in the human retina) respond specifically to colour. Magnification: x1,630 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

Rod cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of rod cells (blue/purple) in the retina of the eye. Rod cells are light sensitive cells which respond to dim light, and are mainly used for dark adapted vision. They cannot detect colours, which is why vision in low light conditions is limited to shades of grey. Colours are detected by cone cells (not seen). When light falls on the tip of a rod cell, a chemical reaction sends an electrical impulse to the optic nerve (not shown), which relays it to the visual cortex of the brain. Magnification unknown.

Light sensitive cells are known as rods and cones, and these cells are long and yellow (at upper image). At lower image (pink) are the bodies of nerve cells which transmit impulses from the rods and cones to the brain via the optic nerve. Nearsightedness (myopia) is a common vision condition in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry. It occurs when the shape of your eye causes light rays to bend (refract) incorrectly, focusing images in front of your retina instead of on your retina.

Eye pigment cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a melanocyte cell with granules of pigment in the light-sensitive retina of the eye. The surface of this melanocyte cell (filling most of frame) has been removed revealing granules of melanin pigment (blue). Covering the cell are numerous finger-like processes called microvilli (purple). This melanocyte forms part of the pigmented epithelium, the outermost cell layer of the retina, beyond which is the highly pigmented choroid. The melanin pigment of this cell absorbs light rays passing through the retina. This prevents interference due to light reflection, assisting with vision. Magnification: unknown.

Seeing in the eyes through the eyes of the heart, which doesn't see, but sees well... and if I could see beyond my naive look, I would say wear glasses, because seeing me, maybe it's not the desired view

This is an important day that seeks to raise awareness about the group of eye diseases known as glaucoma. The day is part of a week of raising awareness about this disease and ensuring that it is caught early. Early detection of glaucoma improves the chances of stopping or at least slowing the disease down with appropriate treatments. The blindness caused by glaucoma is irreversible, but if caught early, the disease can be treated and people will not have to endure the difficulties of blindness when it is preventable.

Biometric eye scan. Conceptual computer artwork of a human eye being scanned. Biometrics is the identification of individuals by their body parts. The iris, the coloured part of the eye, and the retina, the black of the eye, have unique features in every individual. If an image of a person's eye is held on computer they can be identified by an eye scan. Other parts of the body used for biometric scanning include fingerprints and the contours of the face.
