Rocky Mount Magnets

Rocky Mountain High is a 1972 folk song about the serenity found in the Rocky Mountains. The song was controversial when the FCC was permitted by a legal ruling to censor music deemed to promote drug abuse. Numerous radio stations cautiously banned it until the son'g author explained that the "high" was an innocent description of the sense of peace he found in the Rockies. Of course, that doesn't stop recreational drug users still maintaining an association with the song, one that was only reinforced when Colorado legalized marijuana in 2012. Regardless of what your high is, you can't beat experiencing the Rockies from Colorado, home to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as the range's highest peak, Mount Elbert, at 14,440 ft.

Golden hour in any part of the world makes everything look just that little bit more beautiful. Golden hour in the mountains is spectacular and seems to make for completely different scenes every few minutes as the light catches different parts of the mountains. This is one such scene, with the craggy slopes of Mount Rundle, covered with a recent snowfall, lighting up in pure gold.

The Forbidden Forest, also known as the Dark Forest, was a forest that bordered the edges of the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As the forest's name suggests, it was strictly off limits to students — except in the case of detention, or Care of Magical Creatures lessons that occasionally took place there. Of course, with the various dangerous creatures living in the Forest, few students would even want to venture into it.

Some nights do their best to discourage photographers from going out. On this night in June, I headed out to teach a night sky workshop only to be greeted with thick clouds across the entire sky. So, instead of teaching Milky Way photography, I taught the participants about capturing ultra-long exposures of streaky clouds, and then later, about light painting. Just as we were setting up for a few last light painting shots -- and right when I got out my camera to remote trigger a shot while light painting for the participants -- the clouds parted in front of the Milky Way. The reflection of Mount Rundle may have still been covered by the ice, but the spring melt meant that this starry night was perfectly reflected in Two Jack Lake for the first time in months.

You know it's going to be a good morning when you get to your sunrise spot 45 minutes early to set up for a workshop and the sky is already pink. You know it's an even better morning when you have to talk about ways to avoid oversaturation of oranges and pinks because it's such a vivid sunrise!

The hot springs at the end of the last Vermilion Lake steaming at sunrise on a -20ºC winter's day in Banff. I loved how the steam had coated the entire marsh nearby in frost!
