Cor-Ten is a weathering steel; after being exposed to the elements, the top layer becomes a protective rust that never needs painting. Although Cor-Ten is otherwise quite corrosion resistant, it is not completely immune to corrosion. If used near the sea in salty air or if exposed to standing water, it will continue to corrode beyond the initial rusting phase, and thus is not recommended for use under such conditions. Cor-Ten steel is the trademarked but common name for steel in which various alloys are added to create a layer of rust on its surface. Also called weathering steel, this oxidized surface eliminates the need for paint or some other weatherproofing treatment.

Beaks to the West ©Debra Martz We moved to another area of the lake to try for some closer images. Almost all of these Pelicans have their beaks facing west. There is an auto tour drive through a portion of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge with a number of marshes along the way. Several pullouts allow you to stop and view. Normally are more waterfowl at this area in the winter but today only two American Coots that turned and swam away. This area is located between Intermediate Marsh and Mink Run Marsh. Crowded Takeoff by Debra Martz I don't know how they can takeoff when so close and crowded together. The American White Pelican is a very large bird with a length over 5 ft and wingspans up to 9.5 ft. Also, you might notice they are kicking up muddy water. That is just how shallow this lake is becoming due to the ongoing drought. Ice Bank on the Lake by Debra Martz After some severe cold weather in January, we finally had some days of south winds which brought some much wanted warmth. Which meant, time out of the house! So naturally, we headed to the state park only 45 miles away from home. One area of the lake was completely devoid of ice remains and that was where we saw large numbers of Pelicans and Gulls.
