Amateur geology or rock collecting (also referred to as rockhounding in the United States and Canada) is the non-professional study and hobby of collecting rocks and minerals or fossil specimens from the natural environment. In Australia, New Zealand and Cornwall, the activities of amateur geologists are called fossicking. The first amateur geologists were prospectors looking for valuable minerals and gemstones for commercial purposes. Eventually, however, more people have been drawn to amateur geology for recreational purposes, mainly for the beauty that rocks and minerals provide.

The coastline of North Cornwall is a photographer's delight. The ocean has pounded away at the edge of this land for millions of years to form fascinating coves, headlands, cliffs, bays, etc. all to make the scenery spectacular. This image is of Trebarwith Strand at high tide. The tidal fluctuations are great on this stretch of coast. At low tide, a wide beach (strand) opens up, one that is popular with surfers, but at high tide, the waves break against the rocky cliffs. The air is full of ocean breezes and the sound of the crashing waves gives a wonderful sense of excitement. It's wild and untameable, and beauteous beyond compare.

The southern end of Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges from Stokes Lookout. Spring brings colour to the desert in the form of wildflowers and spinifex grass. Although often confused with a volcanic crater or a meteor crater it is actually part of the Adelaide Geosyncline. The actual Pound is sedimentary rock in the form of a large syncline, with the fold axis running NNW-SSE through Edeowie Gorge at the northern end and Rawnsley's Bluff at the southern. Under the Sea 2 is a print produced on an etched metal (zinc) plate. It represents the water and ocean marine life (top layer), sand and sediment (middle layer) and the deeper tectonically formed layers under the ocean bed (bottom layer).

Weathering rings often appears as brown-color pattern on the surface of rocks, especially on the parts with cracks. The weathering ring shown on rocks can be regarded as pieces of extremely fine craftsmanship rendering flawless beauty with high ornamental value. Weathering often occurs along the joins of rocks as they are exposed to the planet’s atmosphere. If the water or the rocks contain iron, it may become ferric oxide after a long time interaction; whereas the color of the weathering ring may darken and turn into tan or brown color.

This image is of the Cliffs of Moher, in County Clare, Ireland, These cliffs rise almost vertically out of the Atlantic, against which they fight an endless battle. The day was wild with periodic rain and wind; the sort of day that fills you with the joy of being alive. The cliffs are magnificent.

Natural shiny silver ore rock with white marble tracery

Standing from the cliff, with my tripod anchored down, I used a 7 second exposure, approx, to control the light, and allow for some movement in the waves, the rest was done in lightroom and possibly some photoshop...

I digitally manipulated a photograph I took of a small geode to look like a painting. The actual geode is in shades of grey and has a very small crystal formulation in its center.

Using full frame Sony A7 technology married to vintage glass and then editing in photos and importing into Lightroom, I worked on this image... I removed the green hue and dialled down the saturation a little to create this piece...

It's not very often I use black and white, but this image looked particularly good in the field in monochrome, and a convert to RAW would lose the workable data, so I kept the JPEG and worked on that. First in photos, then edited in Lightroom, checked over to see that the image was clean and used the Ai mask to sharpen and add texture to the rock... that's it..!
