I've lived near the New forest for around 25 years now, yet only this year, on a lockdown cycle ride did I discover the tranquil little inlet of Ashlett Creek. You can find it just behind Fawley oil refinery, yet you can see, hear and smell nothing of it. The narrow channel leads out to the busy shipping lane of Southampton Water, so there is just a glimpse of container ships, the isle of wight ferry and other large boats passing. The large building is an old tide mill. Out of shot, to the left is a pub - shut at present due to lockdown. I've painted this version in oil on a 16 x 12 inch board.

Lepe (Hampshire, UK) is one of the places I cycle to from my home in Romsey. It lies on the edge of the New Forest and is one of the nearest patches of beach to the city of Southampton. It offers views of the ships coming and going through the Solent, and with pleasant walks through a country park - all with a cafe for tea and cake afterwards. This view comes from a summer's day, when the place was busy (a big contrast to how it looks under lockdown). The arrangement of people made me think of Seurat's pointillist painting, inspiring me to paint the scene myself - but in my own style. I've painted it in oil on a 30x20 inch board

The hampshire flag features a saxon crown and a Tudor Rose. The crown is a reference to Alfred the Great who had his capital in Winchester. The rose is a reference to the double rose on the King Arthur's table.

Built in Finland, but based in Southampton (England), the 15-deck ship entered service in April 2008, can accommodate 4,370 passengers and is served by 1,360 crew. Her gross weight is 154,407 tons, she is 1,112 feet (339 m) long and has a typical cruise speed of 21.6 knots. On-board features include an interactive water park, numerous leisure pools, an internal shopping 'street' lined with shops, pubs and wine bars, a 1200 seat theatre, ice skating rink, climbing wall, basketball/hockey court, mini go...

Spinnaker Tower, opened in 2005, is a 170-metre (560 ft) landmark tower which is the centrepiece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour in Hampshire, southern England. The design represents sails billowing in the wind. The tower stands on the shore of Portsmouth Harbour alongside the modern retail outlet shopping centre, Gunwharf Quays, in contrast to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which houses HMS Victory, the masts of which can be seen in the background of this picture.

Independence on the Pier? Number of views as of 21st May 2018 = 1150. As cruise ships leave Southampton docks heading for the English Channel, something of an optical illusion is created as they pass Hythe Pier. Hythe Pier was built in 1879 and is the 7th longest in the UK. A light railway links the pier head to a passenger ferry terminal at the far end of the pier. LV Calshot Spit Number of views as of 29th May 2019 = 560. Southampton's lightship, LV78 'Calshot Spit' once marked the entrance to Southampton Water. The vessel, built in 1916, has now moved to a new home close to one of Southampton's ocean liner terminals. The backdrop to the shot is one of P & O's largest cruise ships, Azura. Azura The cruise ship Azura, setting sail from the port of Southampton, Hampshire, England. Had the great pleasure of sailing aboard the Azura from Southampton to the Norwegian Fjords earlier this year (2018). She really is a great ship and the crew are a credit to the line. Date: 28th July 2012.

This is an original vintage advert for Ordnance Maps from the Ordnance Survey from 1939. I will be adding many more of these vintage advert designs to my shop over the next few months so please keep checking back if these sorts of images appeal to you. - Please Note: These are old adverts which means they were not always printed straight and level so please don't be surprised to see some slight angle differences around the edges of the adverts. I think the imperfections help to add character to the images. -

As seen from the slow ferry to the Isle Of Wight, this is Fawley oil refinery captured in oil on a 20inch x 16 inch board. I painted it as I liked all the little details of the chimneys and tanks and the patches of rust and gunk.
