Description: The Regnu di Sicilia, or Kingdom of Sicily, was established in 1130 when the Norman ruler Roger II was crowned king in Palermo, beginning a kingdom that would endure in various forms for centuries. Sicily’s most enduring emblem is the Trinacria, an ancient symbol consisting of three bent legs radiating from a central Gorgoneion, or head of Medusa, representing the island’s triangular shape and its three great capes; later versions also incorporated ears of wheat symbolizing Sicily’s extraordinary agricultural fertility. The symbol has ancient Greek roots and appeared on Sicilian coinage long before the medieval kingdom, while its association with Sicilian banners became especially important during and after the Sicilian Vespers of 1282.
