Even on a grey and overcast day above the Arctic circle, the town of Tromso still seems a bright and cheerful place due to the different coloured houses in the town. Historically, buildings were painted to denote their use - red for churches, yellow for schools etc. Although that system no longer applies it has encouraged Norwegian homeowners to continue the tradition and cheering up their local neighbourhood. A good display of the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) in April 2019 over the coastal Norwegian town of Tromsø, North of the Arctic Circle. The best time to see the Northern Lights is between September and April. The aurora is caused by charged particles from the sun hitting the earth's atmosphere.
