In 1947, Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck commissioned 17-year-old artist Walter Goldbach to create a mascot that would convey "pure joy and unbridled enthusiasm," resulting in the smiling, red-faced character with a prominent nose that became Chief Wahoo . The mascot was officially named "Chief Wahoo" in 1952 and appeared on uniforms, caps, and merchandise for decades
