Shady sadist, chain-smoking Ivan Braginsky is ex-KGB, now a novelist, and finds himself clinging to the facets of Soviet culture which formed the backdrop to his youth, and now age 43 still wears a plastic yellow Cheburashka watch. Wearing a chain is his borzoi named Baba Yaga, often cuddling into Ivan’s blood-crusty 1930s bear-fur coat or his moth-eaten ‘leisure wear’ tracksuits; for as strong as Ivan’s nostalgia is his well-learned frugality.
