This view was taken during a ferry ride on the Tagus River (Rio Tejo), looking towards the south/southwest of Lisbon. This is the Almada District, which is famous for its very long walkway along the river. The walkway is known for its mostly abandoned commercial district that is adorned with creative graffiti works almost on every building, wall, door, window, etc. The walkway also leads towards the Sanctuary of Christ The King almost at the end of the path. This is an image of The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Santuário de Cristo Rei), a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon. It is located on top of an isolated hill in the Almada district about 135 m above the sea and overlooking the Tagus River left bank. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The project was inaugurated in May 1959. The giant cement statue was erected to express gratitude because the Portuguese were spared the effects of World War II.
