Almeria Mugs
Description: Chickens beneath my nectarine tree. It has been hot, sunny and quite humid here and we have had the occasional thunderstorm. As a result my finca, in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Spain, is looking particularly lush with rampant weeds. Before we cut back the weeds I wanted to capture the lush greens in watercolour. First I arranged the composition, including the old wheelbarrow. I then encouraged my chickens to gather by spreading some corn around. Description: I decided to paint a watercolour of my handsome, black kitten Valentine. Many paintings of cats are too sentimental and I wanted to produce something different. I arranged two flower pots and an amphora in a part of my garden where there was an interesting contrast of light and shade. I put Valentine on the ground in front of the pots and he stayed still just long enough for me to capture his profile.
Description: During the third wave of Covid sweeping through Almeria, excursions to visit places to paint are not a sensible idea so my latest watercolour is of my home. The two little cats have made themselves at home on my finca. I arranged the old wheelbarrow and spade and waited patiently for the cats to pose and one of my hens to come to the scene. Description: My latest watercolor and back to my old style of more detailed work which I think suits this subject. This entrance to a property in my village, Las Negras, epitomises the Mediterranean. The sun-blistered blue door, the sharp shapes and shadows formed by the cactus and the palm tree against the intense blue sky combine to form a composition which is very typical of where I live. Description: The two Spanish donkeys belong to Manuel, a neighbour of mine in Las Negras, who has a small farm on the edge of the village. They usually come to the fence to speak to me when I go there to buy fresh vegetables. I am particularly fond of donkeys so I enjoyed painting them. I hope you like the painting too.
