Aoraki Mount Cook

Highway 80 to the Hermitage in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park takes you through the fabled Mackenzie district. Each turn in this wonderful traffic free road will surprise you with a grand vista of pristine alpine lakes, crystal clear rivers and the majestic Southern Alps.

One of my favourite shots from a helicopter ride up Franz Josef Glacier and around the Southern Alps. Mighty Aoraki/Mount Cook looks impressive no matter whether you're floating in the clouds or firmly rooted on the ground!

The Hooker River was definitely in a rush to get as far away as possible from Mount Cook, which stands imposing at the end of the Hooker Valley. For the first half of the Hooker Valley Track, Mount Cook was hidden behind the mountain to the right, but it finally came into view here and stood tall over us for the rest of our walk.

At the far end of the Hooker Valley, below Aoraki/Mt Cook in the South Island of New Zealand is the Hooker Glacier and Lake. This was close to the far end of our walk in brilliant sunny weather. We did scramble along the lateral moraine next to the lake to get more interesting photos later on. This valley contains the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. While we were boating on the Tasman Glacier Lake, we were lucky enough to see an iceberg roll over, revealing the gorgeous blue ice that had previously been hidden underwater. This was one of the few other boats that was in the area at the time -- its lucky passengers got to reach out and touch it. Later, our boat pulled up next to it and we were able to feel how smooth the ice was, as well as looking through its translucent blue ice at the sky. A very memorable experience!
