Michael Howe was the original Tasmanian outlaw - an escaped convict who became the leader of a huge gang of bushrangers that terrorised the colonial establishment.

Often considered the most bloody-thirsty of the bushrangers, Clarke led a gang with his cousins the Connells and Berrimans and his brother John. He was supposedly responsible for the deaths of no less than four policemen and countless robberies in a bushranging career that ended with an epic shootout in the Jingera Ranges.

Matthew Brady was one of the first major bushrangers in Australian history and led a moderately successful gang in Tasmania in the early 1800s. He earned a reputation as a gentleman bushranger through his courteous behaviour in spite of his criminality, but still found himself at the end of a rope for murder alongside cannibal and baby-killer Mike Jeffries (much to his chagrin).

Operating around Lambing Flat in the 1860s, Peisley was the sidekick of Frank Gardiner, who he did time with on Cockatoo Island, until he decided to branch out on his own. Peisley's penchant for booze proved to be his undoing, committing a murder in a drunken rage that resulted in him going to the gallows.

One of the Lachlan's most dangerous bushrangers, John O'Meally was a member of the gangs of Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall. O'Meally was short tempered and quick to violence, with at least one death to his name. He met his end during a gunfight at Goimbla.

One of Australia's most prolific outlaws, Ben Hall, committed hundreds of offenses from robberies to holding up entire towns in the span of three years. He was the most wanted man in the British Empire until he was gunned down by police in 1865.

The youthful Dunn was an acolyte of Ben Hall and Johnny Gilbert and managed to outlive both of them. His impulsiveness and joy in the crimes the Hall gang committed led him to the receiving end of a noose.

Leading a gang of boys in a short, violent criminal career including his boyfriend Jimmy Nesbitt, Captain Moonlite was an eccentric through and through. Having served in the Maori Wars and worked for a time as a lay preacher on the Australian goldfields, Scott frequently found himself in trouble with authorities.

Joe Byrne was Ned Kelly's best friend and a member of the Kelly Gang. His knack for language was demonstrated in his ability to speak Cantonese and write song lyrics. He transcribed all of Ned's letters and was his most trusted ally. Unfortunately he was also an opium addict who turned on his childhood friend, murdering him in cold blood before dying himself at the siege of Glenrowan.

Queensland's most infamous bushranger brothers, the Kenniffs were found guilty of murdering Constable Doyle and Albert Dahlke and burning their corpses in 1902. Paddy went to the gallows while his brother Jim spent years in a cell - but many believe they were wrongly convicted.

One of Australia's original Aboriginal bushrangers, Musquito was an Eora man who was once a tracker for the British infantry who found himself transported to Van Diemens Land where he teamed up with a group of Aboriginal insurgents and raided the farms of the settlers. Famed for his ability to disappear into the bush and avoid detection by the forces of law and order.

Edward Davis was the flamboyant leader of a gang that operated in the Hunter Valley. Known for his penchant for jewellery, tattoos and pink ribbons, he started out in a London street gang called the Forty Thieves before being transported to Australia where he escaped into the bush and became a legend.

On the 26th of June 1879, worn down by constant questions regarding Aaron’s loyalty to the gang, Joe scrawled his mate a letter. Despite it being written, I believe, while Joe was heavily under the influence of alcohol, it offers a clear glimpse into his mind at this time.

Operating around the Blue Mountains, Elizabeth Jessie McIntyre, better known as Jessie Hickman or "The Lady Bushranger" was a former rough rider and prolific stock thief with a gang of young men at her beck and call whose daring horse riding kept her two steps ahead of the police. A country girl through and through, she left her husband when he found work in the city because she couldn't bear the thought of leaving the bush.
