Cartography Mugs

I moved to Southern California in 1999. I couldn't find a map of all of the communities and neighborhoods of Orange County. I set about making my own -- exploring the vast county on foot and mass transit. Along the way, I drew maps with ink and painted them in watercolors and oil paint -- or some combination (including correction fluid). As a lefty converted to a righty, my handwriting is terrible and my maps are sometimes hard to read when reproduced or reprinted -- and so I've made these clean, digital versions for people who prefer that sort of thing.

Little Bangladesh is a small ethnic enclave in Midtown Los Angeles. It is perhaps, the only officially recognized ethnic enclave within another ethnic enclave (Koreatown). I explored it for my series, "California Fool's Gold," in 2010. https://ericbrightwell.com/2010/05/17/1186/

Palms is one of the most culturally interesting neighborhoods on Los Angeles's Westside. It's home to Simpang Asia, the Museum of Jurassic Technology, and the Center for Land Use Interpretation. West Adams, historically, refers to a sub-region of Los Angeles centered along West Adams Boulevard. Today, it also refers to a newer neighborhood of South Los Angeles, also bisected by West Adams. Thus, this map is distinguished as "Historic West Adams."

Pasadena is today only the ninth-most populous cities in Los Angeles County. However, it is easily one of the most historically and culturally important. Arcadia is a suburb of the San Gabriel Valley which now has a population that is roughly two-thirds Asian-American (mostly Chinese and Taiwanese). It is thus often jokingly referred to as "Arcasia." Scotland is a country that covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain and includes more than 790 smaller islands. It shares a border with England to the southeast as well as a maritime border with Eire.
