Description: Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig owned by Transocean and operated by BP. On 20 April 2010, while drilling at the Macondo Prospect, a blowout caused an explosion on the rig that killed 11 crewmen and ignited a fireball visible from 40 miles (64 km) away. The fire was inextinguishable and, two days later, on 22 April, the Horizon sank, leaving the well gushing at the seabed and causing the largest marine oil spill in history.
Description: A massive meteor shower destroys the orbiting Space Shuttle Atlantis, before entering the atmosphere and bombarding New York City. NASA discovers that the meteors were pushed out of the asteroid belt by a rogue comet that jarred loose a Texas-sized asteroid that will impact Earth in 18 days, causing an extinction level event that will wipe out all life on the planet. NASA contacts Harry Stamper, considered the best deep sea oil driller in the world, for assistance. Harry departs for Houston with his daughter Grace, where they are told about the asteroid and agree to help.
Description: The Kerr-McGee Corp. was an American energy company involved in oil exploration, crude production, natural gas, perchlorate and uranium mining and milling. Founded in 1929 as Anderson & Kerr Drilling Company in Oklahoma by Robert S. Kerr and James L. Anderson, the firm changed its name to Kerr-McGee Oil Industries in 1946 when Dean A. McGee, former chief geologist for Phillips Petroleum, joined the firm. Kerr-McGee initially focused on offshore oil exploration and production, being one of the first to use drill ships in the Gulf of Mexico, and later, one of the first to use a spar platform in the region. In 2006, Anadarko Petroleum acquired Kerr-McGee in an all-cash transaction totaling $16.5 billion, plus $2.6 billion in debt.
