The uprising was the armed insurrection that started the process that eventually led to Irish Independence from Great Britain and the partition of the island of Ireland into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The 1916 Easter Rising was one of Irelands most important events. Though it failed to overthrow British rule it laid the groundwork for eventual independence. The Proclamation read by Padraig Pearse on the steps of the GPO was one of the 20th centuries most forward thinking and progressive documents. This design celebrates the Proclamation by showing the opening paragraph under the 1916 in the colours of the Irish Flag.
