When the type specimen for the Darwin’s Star Orchid was collected, Darwin predicted the presence of a hawk moth with a proboscus long enough to reach the end of the nectar tube…the Darwin’s hawk moth. This drawing is about specificity of function, how, when you’re weird, it implies a particular strategy. As a 12 year old with mad ADHD (&EDS), I jumped 23ft out of a tree onto a hillside. Why? Trying to look cool I’m sure, but I don’t think anyone would have thought it was cool even if I made it. I broke the end off my tibia. It should have been a surgical fix, but maybe I was too young. It healed badly partially because I ran around on it chasing lizards. Ignoring pain has always been a strength of mine.

Death's head moths, hawk moths, or sphinx moths, whatever you call them, they are dancing against an orange blood harvest moon. A lovely spooky and symmetrical vision.

Wanted to give this representation some movement although these little critters are quite static. Spending time out in the field is giving me more awareness of how things work. Bit by bit I'm piecing things together which might have been elemental or rather fundamental at University level ~ but consolidates much better whilst out and about... I stumbled upon this rather large caterpillar... of which I've not seen the likes of anything bigger on my travels! Upon the stem of Willow-herb this caterpillar is harmless and eats its fill until it goes to ground and pupates over winter - to produce the beautiful Elephant Hawk Moth in spring. A hand drawn death's head hawkmoth. I watch the TV series Hannibal from start to finish at least once every year - it is literally the best tv show that has ever existed. Beautiful, terrifying and beguiling... much like the moth.
