This is the third sighting I have had of this lovely but elusive songbird in the yard, but this is the only time I have seen it out in the open, perfectly and calmly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn), whose reddish-orange berries are a big hit with the usual repertoire of wintering birds in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The warm yellow background--courtesy of the leaves of the neighbor's weeping alder--adds a golden, autumn-y touch to this image! This photo was featured in the 2018 Wild Birds Unlimited Calendar, the 2018 Nature Canada Calendar, the 2020 Canadian Geographic Photo Club Calendar, and the 2021 Canadian Geographic 365-page-a-day Calendar.

The Hermit Thrush Natural history of vintage birds of North America

A pretty thrush sitting on a branch, in a golden sunlit wood. The hermit thrush sings a beautiful song that sounds like a cross between a flute and windchimes, and is native to the place where I grew up - the American state of Maine. If you want to find one of these thrushes, you would have to go into the forest, where they rarely ever venture out from. Once in the forest, though, it's not hard to spot one... hopping around the leafy ground, or perching on low branches.

This is my acrylic painting of the Vermont state bird and flower, the hermit thrush and red clover. Vermont was admitted to the union on March 4, 1791 as the 14th state. Red clover is grown by dairy farmers who use the purple flowers as grazing food for their cattle. I added a four-leaf clover in this scene for good luck and love. This painting is part of my state bird and flower collection.
