Insect Mugs
Description: A commission for an insect lover! Dogbane leaf beetles are specialists on dogbane plants. Dogbane is resistant to a lot of herbivory due to chemicals and the production of latex. To deter herbivores, dogbane plants expel a milky latex that dries and sticks to mouthparts of other insects. Dogbane beetles do not cut leaf veins prior to feeding like many herbivorous insects. They feed on the low-latex tissue of the distal part of leaves.* Females lay eggs mainly on the undersides of leaves, then cover the eggs with a shield to protect them. When the larvae emerge, they consume the shields, drop to the ground, and eat underground portions of the plants before they emerge the following year as adults. *From article by Merrell Peterson

Description: This Mayfly with the scientific name, 'Ephemerella subvaria', is most often imitated by the Dark Hendrickson. These are dark mayflies that are usually the first large mayfly hatch of the season. This classic pattern is popular year after year, and tied in various dark shades depending on the area. It is still used since it was originally tied in 1916, by Roy Steenrod, and remains very popular today. Originally used in the Catskills, this pattern is very effective in most trout waters in the U.S. and in other countries The Dark Hendrickson Dry Fly is painted in Gouache watercolor, and is a print from my original. Another classic pattern. A great gift for the fishing enthusiast.

Description: Black and white ink illustration of a walking phasmid. I made this drawing using a stippling technique with a fine pen on Bristol board. A slender stick insect is depicted against a plain background, creating a simple and uncluttered composition. The stick insect's delicate body and long, thin legs contribute to its camouflage - like appearance as a twig or branch. Stick insects are part of a classification of insects known as Phasmatodea and are herbivores, feeding on leaves. These insects are made found across many parts of the world and have many names and vary greatly in appearance but are famous for their stick like appearance with long thin legs and a long body as seen in this example.
