The Olesons established the Mercantile many years earlier, before their children (Nellie and Willie) were born, and is a highly successful business, serving the needs of Walnut Grove and Hero Township. The Mercantile was first seen in Little House's debut episode, "A Harvest of Friends," and is the setting for many of the the show's episodes and plots. It is one of two businesses operated by the Oleson family, the other being Nellie's Restaurant and Hotel, which was established in the Season 6 season premiere "Back to School."
