Bobbles (pilling or linting) are essentially damaged fibres that are pulled or torn from clothing and get caught back up in the fibres of the garments in washing machines or dryers or are shed into the environment. Collectively, every time we wash millions of pieces of these microplastics escape into the environment. Microfibers account for 85 percent of global shoreline pollution, and are responsible for most microplastic pollution in our waterways and oceans. I Love Eating Microplastic - Text Style

According to a 2019 study from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego there is estimated to be 8.3 million pieces of microplastic per cubic meter of ocean water. And all that microplastic stays in the water to be consumed by animals-- and even eventually humans. When I read that study I couldn't stop thinking about those iconic images of sea turtles slowly making their way through floating ocean trash, only this time it was instead with an unseen swirl of microplastic following in their wake. I've attempted to capture that thought of an unseen pollutant swirling behind the sea turtle as it makes its way through the ocean. I printed this hand-carved lino print by hand before scanning it.
