The Wurtherington Diary: The California Gold Rush art by Duy Truong. Goldie tossed Mrs. Endicott into the water trough and that brought it to an end. Well, almost so. Goldie slipped and fell in horse dung and ended up with it all over her clothes and face. Mrs. Endicott ran down the street carrying what was left of her dignity and Goldie pushed back into the Sourdough Saloon. She grabbed a beer and splashed it over her head in an attempt to wash off the dung. She looked at me with pure hatred. "You pushed us out there and look at me!" The bartender handed her a mirror and held back a smirk. She took one look and cried, "I hate you!" and began hurling beer glasses at me. I grabbed a chair and fended her off as though she were a crazed s...

The Wurtherington Diary: The California Gold Rush art by Duy Truong Later that afternoon a young boy came running into the office. "You gotta help my dad. Jessie Cole and his men are tryin' to take over our claim." He had brought an extra horse and we rode with him out to the mine. He told us that he was Jim Endicott and that Will was his father. When we arrived, Cole's men were staging a gun battle with Endicott who was holed up in the mine shack with pistols and a shotgun. I told Cole to hold his fire and gave him time to show me the signed paper giving ownership of the mine to him. He said, "He's on my land and won't give it up." I said, "I am the sheriff. It is my job to evict him. I'll go in and talk to him. Tell your men to p...

Tammy and the California Gold Rush: Art by Duy Truong. We decided to do a test run and soon we were all flying around Kira. We found ourselves over Sakuna, the home of the Kakuna elves. I could see they were happy to see us flying overhead and decided to land in the center of the village. Chief Wanakuka and his wife, Lanacua ran down the balcony to greet us. They were amazed to see all of us flying upon Polly. She was a hit among the Kakuna and a large crowd gathered to admire her. Polly, of course, loved every minute of it. Lanacua said, "You must stay and have a luncheon with us." Zeke and Cedric were hungry ( they loved to eat all the time) and we agreed to stay. Picnic tables were set in the middle of the square and we found oursel...

Tammy and the California Gold Rush: Art by Duy Truong. Alfred said, "Yes, this is going to be much better. You are dumping too much water into the bucket. You should skim off the water and then dump the gravel. We only have the one bucket, sir." "Of course," he said as he swirled the gravel around in the pan and then dumped the water back into the flume. He dumped the gravel into the bucket and something caught his eye. He reached into the bucket and pulled out a tiny nugget. "My, my," he said. "This is quite strange, indeed." He brushed it off and held it up to the light. "If I did not know any better, I would say this was a golden nugget." We all gathered around. I said, "I would not be surprised if it were gold." Alfred said, ...

The Wurtherington Diary: The California Gold Rush art by Duy Truong, Cedric said, "I hope this goes better than the last trip!" I hoped so too as it was a terrifying ordeal. A whirlwind swept all about us and the shed hurled into the air as though we were in the center of a tornado. When I opened my eyes, we were all standing on the balcony of the palace that overlooked the city. We all let out a sigh of relief that the trip went without any problems. Lucinda and Queen Betty greeted us. Alfred became a human as he always did when we returned to Kira. Kakuna elves served us gobble berry pastries and lemonade while we sat under scarlet parasols. Lucinda asked, "How was your trip today? I hope it was not the dreadful affair you encounte...

The Wurtherington Diary: The California Gold Rush art by Duy Truong. I said, "I'm ordering you to give up your guns before you get hurt." Mad Dog Zeke gave an icy stare. He growled, "Drop'm now or make your move." Onlookers held their breath as they ducked for cover behind barrels that lined the boardwalk. The trio pulled their weapons from the holsters and sent bullets flying toward us. Mad Dog Zeke and Rattlesnake Cedric ricocheted the flurry of bullets off the skillets. Guns flew from the trio's bloodied hands as their own bullets found fresh targets. I kicked their guns aside as they stood holding their mangled hands. I said, "Turn around, boys. The jail is that way." Fish Eye said, "I need a doctor." Wacko and Rio wrapped ke...

Art by Duy Truong................Cochise said, "Cochise make peace. Chiricahua move to new lands soon." I said, "You are a wise and great chief. Come with me and I will show you your news lands." He was a bit hesitant but soon was aboard Polly. We did a figure eight around the village and then sailed off for the Chiricahua mountains. I knew that much of this was familiar to him; however seeing it from the air would be a great experience for him. When we arrived, we settled to the grassy plain and I pointed to the posts that set the Southwest boundary. A sign said Chiricahua Reservation. I said, "You can see the post set here to mark your land. The Great White Chief has declared these lands off limits to whites. Any that are there now...

Art by Duy Truong............................Buffalo Bill Cody trotted out on Powder Face and waved to the cheering crowd. We watched many different acts that included reenactments of scenes from Buffalo Bill, the King of the Border Men. Ned Buntline announced many of the acts and acted as the master of ceremonies. The audience loved him. An actor playing Wild Bill Hickok came out and demonstrated his shooting abilities. He told the audience that guns were dangerous and should not be in the hands of children. Cody was clearly the star of the show when he talked about the loss of the true West while a stringed orchestra played behind him He said, "The Indians are the first Americans and we must do all we can for them."

Art by Duy Truong......................Ned Buntline followed up on his promise with Private Pike Hunter for that picture. He hired a photographer to take pictures of Pike, Wild Bill, and Cody and many others. All of these pictures would end up in his stories and make Wild Bill and Cody heroes of the West. We saw Ned Buntline get on that stage headed back to New York. He waved as he passed through the gate. "I'll have a book written about you before Christmas," he promised. "I'll send you a copy!" We sat with Wild Bill and Cody overlooking the prairie that stretched to the horizon. A buffalo herd bedded down for the night as the Sun sank low in the West. Off to the north a trio of Kiowa braves sat on mustangs gazing at the scarlet sun...

Art by Duy Truong...................General Oliver Howard opened the door. He said, "You may come in now." President Grant came out from behind his desk and greeted each of us. I could see that General Oliver Howard and Eli S. Parker had prepared him for my associates and he did well to hold back his astonishment at seeing talking animals for the first time (and probably his last). Alfred swept his hat across the carpet in a grand gesture. He said, "It is indeed a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President. I do thank you for meeting with us this afternoon."

Art by Duy Truong................................(Earlier) Zeke took me aside. He said, "I'm going next door and bring back magic dancing shoes." He gave me a wink and I caught on. We found a great pair of shoes and rushed back to the post office. Yep—these were enchanted shoes guaranteed to turn anyone into a dancing master. "Magic shoes!" Zeke polished them off with his sleeve and claimed he could feel the aura of the magic shoes. Tom put them on and walked around the room. "I can feel the magic!" he said. Cedric, Zeke, and Alfred began playing a waltz. I counted, "One, two, three, long, short, short," like Mrs. Prescott taught us at River Falls Elementary. I said, "The magic shoes are working. Look at Tom dance!"........................

Art by Duy Truong..................Ned Buntline said, "I am afraid I have failed again. I had an idea about writing a travelogue and can see that my readers in New York will be bored with it. I need something with a brave hero saving the world something that will grab the readers with the romance of the West." He brought out a kerchief and sobbed, "I'm a complete failure!" Zeke placed his arm around him. "Poor Mr. Buntline. It can't be that bad." Cedric said, "You must get a hold of yourself, mate. There is always hope that better times are ahead." Ned Buntline said, "Sometimes I feel that there is no hope." He sobbed uncontrollably into the kerchief. Alfred, Cedric, and Zeke brought out a piccolo, a harmonica and a guitar. Zek...

Art by Duy Truong.................... This is the seventh book in the illustrated historical series, The Wurtherington Diary. This is a stand-a-lone story and is part two of the real-life adventures Tammy had with Buffalo Bill Cody. Of course she is in good company with Alfred the mouse, Zeke the orphaned opossum, Cedric, the mischievous mongoose, and Polly, the goodhearted bird. This part of Tammy's diary takes place about nine years later when Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill were friends. As with all the Wurtherington Diary books, this one abounds in developing worthwhile feelings for its young readers. Things like honesty, compassion, and respect for others abound on very page. For example, Tammy sees that the extinction of the ...

Art by Duy Truong...........................Meanwhile Cedric and Yellow Cloud were hitting it off quite well. Cedric said, "There was this Apache friend of mine and a mangy coyote with fleas...." "Ugg—Yellow Cloud like story so far." Zeke came wandering in the door with an Indian outfit. "I bought this for you, Tammy." I could tell he wanted me to try it on. It was a slide over-the-top outfit so I put it on. He handed me a three feathered Indian hat and I took a look in the window where I could see my reflection. I gave a little shake and it all fell into place. Yes, I looked like an Indian princess. I gave him a kiss for being so thoughtful. Alfred handed me a beaded necklace to finish off the new look. I could see they wanted to...

The Wurtherington Diary: The California Gold Rush art by Duy Truong. February 18, 1848 Dear Diary, We rode the stage back to Coloma that afternoon. Posters of Rattlesnake Cedric, Mad Dog Zeke, and me were posted up and down the road with warnings not to fire a gun in the town. The voting was closed and Judge Slade was busy counting the ballets on the boardwalk. A banjo player sat on a barrel and sang a song to a tiny gathering of children. "Mad Dog and Rattlesnake were the meanest deputies of the West. They carried no guns because they were quicker than the rest. They carried skillets and they would whack you on the head. Bandits learned to run from them; otherwise they were dead!" Mad Doggggggg! Rattlesnaaaaaaake! ...

The Wurtherington Diary: The California Gold Rush art by Duy Truong. Later, an older woman took me aside. She said, "Ma Parker is taking care of three little orphaned children in a tent outside of town. She takes in children and treats them as though they were her own. She has a heart of gold, and needs help keeping up as she has no money." Alfred said, "We could give her money if that would help." "No, that will not do," she said. "She is a proud woman and would not accept charity." I told her I had an idea and would take care of it. Zeke said, "We must do something." Zeke was an orphan, one-of-a-kind and knew what it was like to be alone. We walked to the edge of town and found her tent. She was busy washing the hair of a l...

Wurtherington, Diary, art by Duy Truong. This is our second bedtime scene and Duy Truong has created another marvelous piece of art that is simply stunning. In this scene, the reader can see that Polly, the loveable vulture, has joined the group. Duy has gone all out with this drawing (as she always does) and has all the little touches that make this painting magical. It is bedtime now. I have Zeke and Cedric tucked in doll-size beds in opposite corners of the room. I discovered that they tend to keep each other awake when they are too close together. Polly stood outside the window looking so forlorn all by herself; it was clear to me she wanted a sleeping place with us. I told her she could sleep at the foot of my bed and I would ma...
