Rainforest landscape in Monteverde Costa Rica

Bromeliads growing in the Cloud Forests of Monteverde National Park, Costa Rica. Bromiliads are epiphytes. An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of another plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, or from debris accumulating around it. It sometimes grows on fallen logs. It is not a parasite. What looks like a colourful flower are bracts which protect its very small flowers. Canon 6D, zoom lens.

Variegated squirrels, Sciurus variegatoides, are common all over Costa Rica and come in a variety of colors from white with a black back to solid black around Manuel Antonio, to brown black and white like this one in Monte Verde National Park. They are fast and agile tree climbers. They enjoy eating large seeds, hard nuts, leaves, flowers, twigs, tree frogs eggs, and insects. However this one is stealing bananas from a bird feeder. The Central American Agouti, Dasyprocta punctata, is a tropical rodent looks a little like a cross between a rabbit and a squirrel. Agoutis are vital to the ecosystem as they are important seed predators who also act as dispersers. They feast on seeds from trees and will transport and bury seeds in caches, much like squirrels do in the temperate forests. They go back to dig up some of the seeds, but leave the rest. The forgotten seeds are the next generation of plants in the rainforest. Canon 6D, zoom lens.

VILLA DORIA PAMPHILI - Rome Italy

The Monteverde Angel is one of my favorite sculptures. It is on the tomb of the Oneto Family in the cemetery of Staglieno in Genoa Italy. She is beautiful and I have been fortunate enough to make several tattoos based on photographs of the sculpture. This is my own bunny version.

Stem of crucifix orchids, Epidendrum radicans, in the wild at Monteverde in Costa Rica. These little orchids stand out with their bright colour in the dark of the cloud forest surroundings. The common name refers to the lip of the flower called the labellum, which resembles a small cross. Canon 6D, zoom lens. (Featured in Enchanted Flowers, and Other Groups.)
