The female is less than 10cm long (tip of the beak to tip of the tail) and weighs only 4.8 g. Female Purple-throated Mountaingem Hummingbird, Lampornis calolaemus. The Scintillant Hummingbird (Selasphorus scintilla) is the smallest hummingbird within its range, which includes only the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama. This is a male. This is one of the smallest birds in existence, marginally larger than the bee hummingbird. The male weighs 2 g (0.071 oz) and the female 2.3 g (0.081 oz). As it flies past it looks like a beetle in flight or a large bumble bee. Canon 6D, zoom lens. (Featured in Love These Creatures.)
