Because of the cloud the dawn came in very softly

Day two of our Luxmore Hut overnighter saw us up before dawn and summiting Mt Luxmore. The view completely surpassed my expectations and it's up there in my all time favourites. We stayed up top for an hour and a half.

I wasn't even planning on drawing anything the day I created this but every time I cycle past this view I can't help stopping and soaking it up some more. This was also the time I realised if I couldn't fit a whole mountain range in a drawing I just needed to make it wider! Who knew!

In New Zealand, when the pohutukawa trees flower in all the scarlet glory, it's a sure sign summer is here and it's time to head to the beach!

Painted during a rather stressful fortnight in Auckland, where I tried to leave for Australia, got locked down and accidentally destroyed my passport! Taking breaks at the beach became vital

It took a year but I finally made it up the Lower Wye Creek Track. A bit of an odd one because these amazing views were actually fairly near the beginning... and then you hike up a valley until you decide to turn around!

On the way down from a Queenstown Hill walk, the lake was the stillest I've ever seen it.

My favourite thing about the Paparoa Track is that unlike some of the other Great Walks, which result in a long trudge back to the carpark at the end, this just gets better and better! Then bam! You're suddenly in a carpark wishing you had more.

Pororari Hut was really special. You have to earn it, with quite a long day of trail, including endless switchbacks but once you spot it from the trees it's quite a relief. It's on top of hill that lost all of it's trees to cyclones so you're treated to a 360 panorama including the sun setting over the sea!

After spending the second day of the Paparoa Track entirely in cloud, the view from Moonlight Tops on the third day was a welcome surprise! We could saw all the way to the sea! It didn't last long but I managed to get this painting in.

A quick and REALLY WINDY hike up Parachute Rocks. This was half way along the ridge line where I managed to find a slight curve in the hill to shelter from the gusts. I still only had time for a sketch though so this is painted back in the shelter of home!

This is the view from the bridge at Welcome Flat Hut. A seven hour hike to an amazing hut with large natural hot pools. We spent a couple of days up there so we could really soak up the views. And soak ourselves. Painting at sunset is super trciky because the light and shadows change so fast!

Rob Roy is hands down the most reward for the least hiking. The drive through the Matukituki valley is possible the most beautiful drive I've ever been on (a familiar occurence in New Zealand) and the hike itself only takes two hours to put you right in front of a big glacier shelf. It's such a special place! Try and get there in Winter for bonus icy-ness.

The Fernhill Loop is a nice half a day of a hike. A bit less of a mission than Ben Lomond with some nice views of the Wakatipu Basin.

That time we climbed up Gertrude Saddle, only to realise we'd love to camp there, so we went back down, got our tents and did it again! Painted at home from photos because we didn't have time AND there were 85km gales!
