Equiano was kidnapped as a child from a village in what is now southern Nigeria and sold into slavery. He bought his own freedom in 1766, then spent his life in London fighting for others as part of the abolitionist movement. His 1789 memoir, The Interesting Narrative, was a bestseller. It showed Britain the brutal truth of the slave trade and helped fuel the campaign that led to the Slave Trade Act of 1807.
