Osprey Mugs

The Osprey or Fish Hawk is common on almost every continent with the exception of Antarctica. Its primary meal is fish. Here in Montana they arrive in April and stay until mid to late October when their young are old enough to migrate.

An Osprey flying. The Osprey is a very cool raptor, considered the “King of Birds” in Buddhism, and often representing the mythical Thunderbird in Native American art. This beautiful bird of prey is also called “Sea Hawk” or “Fish Hawk”, because they eat fish almost exclusively, and can be seen frequently flying over the ocean, lakes, and rivers.

Also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey that was seriously endangered by effects of pesticides in mid-20th century; since DDT and related pesticides were banned in 1972, Ospreys have made a good comeback in many parts of North America. Found near water, either fresh or salt, where large numbers of fish are present. May be most common around major coastal estuaries and salt marshes, but also regular around large lakes, reservoirs, rivers. Migrating Ospreys are sometimes seen far from water, even over the desert.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) with fish, Southern California.

Ospreys are magnificent birds and it is a great experience to see them hunting for fish. They swoop down and catch the unsuspecting fish in their talons as this one has just done, before flying away to a nearby tree or nest to enjoy it's catch.

An osprey looks for a sushi lunch over a Florida beach.

It helps to know where the ospreys live and feed. After a good meal they will head down to the nearest pool of water to wash up.

I saw this Osprey in Florida, it was flying back towards it's nest with a big branch of Spanish moss to line the nest with. The nests are very big and are added to each year. The bird was flying against a bland white sky, so I changed it with another one of my sky pics and added one of my textures to give it a bit more atmosphere.

Canon Rebel T3i. Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) are large birds, standing 21 to 24 in. tall and having a wing span of up to approximately 6 ft. They are dark brown above with white stomach and legs below. The head is white with dark speckles on the crown and a dark brown line through the eye. Two of the best field marks of the osprey are that it flies with crooked or “M”—shaped wings and has dark carpal patches on the under wing. It is the only raptor that actually plunges into the water, entering feet first to catch fish with its talons. Ospreys are one of the best birds of prey to photograph ,those talons and that intense glare in the eyes makes you happy that you are not their prey. This osprey headed took after after finishing a meal and flew straight in my direction creating on opportunity of a lifetime. Taken at Kings Beach, Caloundra in Queensland.
