Alligator Bags of Port Aransas by Debra Martz There are two very large alligators that have lived in the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas for quite some time. By locals, they are referred to as Bags and Boots. This is Bags...the smaller of the two. Though this area is called a birding center, there is no containment. All wildlife and birds are free to come and go. It is a great place for bird watching along a sidewalk where flowering plants are maintained and then onto the boardwalk, including an observation tower, that extends out over the marsh like area.

Cedar Waxwings Migrating North by Debra Martz We were at Paradise Pond in Port Aransas, Tx and I was tracking a Magnolia Warbler with my lens when my husband Doug called out, "Look up!" And of course, I did!! This is just a portion of the very large flock of Waxwings that flew over us. Happy to have seen this but sure would have been nice if they would have decided to circle around and land in a tree nearby. Obviously to early in the day to stop on their northbound migration on this day, May 14th. Cedar Waxwings are a shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. Tricolored Heron Angel Wings by Debra Martz I captured this image of the heron from the Leonabelle boardwalk in Port Aransas, Texas. When they spread their wings it reminds me of the wings of an angel. Tricolored Heron are beautiful with colors of blue-gray, lavender, white and yellowish legs. They are easily identifiable because unlike other dark herons, they have a white belly and white stripe down the middle (front) of its long neck. Acadian Flycatcher Photopainting by Debra Martz The first few weeks of May were great for bird watching at Leonabelle Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas. There were tons of migratory birds and birds returning for their summer residence. After so many rainy days, there were plenty of insects for this tiny flycatcher to zip in and out of the tree and catch them on the fly! Cool Facts from All About Birds Curiously, no information exists on the ability of the Acadian Flycatcher to walk or hop. It is an excellent flier, though, extremely maneuverable and able to hover and even fly backward. Couch's Kingbird - Dragonfly for Lunch by Debra Martz We heard this kingbird calling as it flew through the treetops around noon at Estero LLano Grande State Park. Finally it landed up high, looked around for awhile, then swooped down and caught this dragonfly. This huge dragonfly!! It worked on it for a while, tossing and tapping on the limb in an effort to try and remove the wings. But in the end, ate the dragonfly, wings and all!!

Ring-billed Gull Handrail Walker ©Debra Martz What I can say other than to advise keeping your hands off the handrails! This one was using the rail to stroll slowly along, stop and check the waters below for possible prey and stroll again leaving its mark. Even when I walked on by, it did not depart the rail. Common Gallinule Looking Fluffy by Debra Martz The tail showing off white under tail feathers is just one of the displays of courtship during mating season. And, it was March so this is a possible reason for the raised tail. The Common Gallinule in the Americas were once known as the Common Moorhen like those of the Old World. Juvenile Black Crowned Night Heron by Debra Martz ........................... A visit to the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas always delivers for the birdwatching fans! On this January day, I didn't notice this young night heron tucked in the reeds just a few feet away from the boardwalk at first. I actually walked right on by as I was watching some ducks on the opposite side. But as they say, turn-around and look all directions before moving on because you might have just missed something else. Pie-billed Grebe On A Sunny Day by Debra Martz Pie-billed Grebes are often referred to as part bird, part submarine as they are expert divers in their habit of rivers, freshewater marshes, lakes and esturaries. And because they are such expert divers, they are often difficult to keep up with as they dive often and you never know where they will surface. Young White Ibis Feeding in the Grass by Martz There was a family of Ibis feeding on insects in this grassy area located near the Intracoastal waterway in Port A, Texas. There were the all white adults, a few immatures and juveniles. Anticipating the Next Flying Insect by Debra Martz On January 6th the weather was beautiful so decided to take a quick trip over to Port Aransas, TX to see if any birds were around. There were not too many winter migratory birds with the exception of plenty Yellow-rumped Warblers and a few other species. These warblers were quite busy zipping off the branches and out to midair to capture flying insects. Here at Paradise Pond, where it is usually busy with birds, it is not so much now as most of the trees came down with Hurricane Harvery in August 2017.
