Reflections In Water Mugs

A frosty December morning at Hungerford in West Berkshire by the Kennet and Avon Canal. The sun has lit up the old canal bridge where a distant figure is walking along the towpath towards the Wharf. Hungerford is a picturesque market town near the border with Wiltshire and is well known for its many antique shops. Ahead the waterway takes us on to Bath and Bristol whilst behind us lie Reading and the Thames. Digital art from my original photograph.

The view from the towpath next to the old Weavers' Cottages at West Mills in Newbury, West Berkshire. Peaceful now, this was once a hive of activity with corn mills using the river's water to turn their waterwheels. The mill here was bought by Hovis in 1921 and was eventually sold in the 1950s. The tall building opposite was once the granary. On the right is the swing bridge over the navigation leading to the lock and town centre.To the left are the mill 's sluice gates.

The tranquil view from the towpath near the Weavers Cottages in West Mills, Newbury belies the once-bustling corn mills powered by the River Kennet. Hovis bought the mill in 1921, which was then sold in the 1950s. The tall granary building across the river stands as a testament to its industrial history. The swing bridge on the right leads to the town centre, while the mill's sluice gates can be seen on the left. The reflections of the mill buildings and trees on the calm water of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

Hungerford Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire, seen from the towpath on the town bank of the waterway. Always a good place for the local ducks as they often get fed here! This was captured on a bright sunny day in late November, A peaceful scene now, but in the past this would have been a hive of industry with canal boats loading and unloading goods such as Bath stone for building, agricultural produce and equipment, coal and general goods.

The tranquil South Harbour at Blyth in Northumberland houses the prestigious Royal Northumberland Yacht Club. This captivating image, captured on a chilly January morning, showcases the picturesque home yacht and marina. The peaceful waters provide a perfect reflection of the majestic yachts and fishing boats, while the stunning blue sky with fluffy clouds adds to the captivating scene. The marina, with its intricate rigging, towering masts and impressive ships, is a hub of activity, showcasing the working harbour of Blyth.

A view looking across the River Thames at Marlow in Buckinghamshire. In the background is the fine suspension bridge opened in 1832 and designed by by William Tierney Clark. This is also the model for the Szechenyl Chain Bridge over the River Danube in Budapest. Next to the bridge is the Compleat Angler Hotel. This stretch of river is famous for rowing, having produced Olympic champions such as Sir Steve Redgrave.

The South Harbour at Blyth in Northumberland is the home of the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club and this image of the 'home yacht' and marina was shot on a cold, sunny September morning when the calm conditions were good for the reflections of the yachts on the water.

The world is a great mirror. It reflects back to you what you are.

Looking down on an old row boat moored against a wooden staging in the River Ant in Barton Turf in the Norfolk Broads National Park. Whilst this little boat may be a little grubby and in need of some TLC it is perfect for exploring the smaller back waters in the Norfolk Broads water network.

A trio of Great egrets glide along the shoreline as the night closes in, looking for their last bit of supper before going to roost for the night. This is a composite of four different images I took on a recent holiday to make a typical scene on the beaches of Florida at evening time. The egrets are very beautiful birds and particularly graceful in flight.

Seaton Sluice harbour in Northumberland is a tidal harbour for small craft and this image was shot at high tide on a calm, sunny afternoon in late November looking eastwards over the harbour towards the North Sea.

A landing stage on the River Thames at Marlow just above the weir and lock. Marlow is a beautiful old Georgian town in Buckinghamshire which sits on the north bank of the Thames. A fine suspension brisge links the town to Berkshire on the southern bank. This stretch of the river is famous for rowing, the club here producing Olympic champions such as Sir Steve Redgrave, Past residents of Marlow have included Jerome K Jerome, Mary Shelley and TS Elliot.

A narrowboat on the River Kennet moored just above the town lock at Newbury, West Berkshire. This is the West Mills area, so called because once there were corn mills here - the sluices for them are on the left of the image. The mills were owned by Hovis from 1921 until the 1950s. Further on and past the swing bridge, the Kennet Navigation as it is properly called, becomes the Kennet and Avon Canal, taking us all the way to Bristol.

The Kennet Navigation, becoming the Kennet and Avon Canal above the bridge, would have been busy with boats loading and unloading everything from grain and flour to Bath stone for building.

A quiet place to sit and think or just relax by the shore of a lake as the day is ending and the sun is lighting the scene with ita evening glow. There's birdsong in the air and the neaby call of waterfowl. What a pleasant spot!

Traverse City East Bay, approximately 10 minutes after sunset during "the blue hour".

This image was shot from the Tyne Bridge looking up river towards the Swing Bridge and High Level bridges connecting the City of Newcastle to Gateshead. The Swing Bridge is a Grade II listed building and was completed in 1875 with a span of 85.5 meters.

The view from the bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Kintbury in West Berkshire. The canal passes through the village by way of Kintbury Lock, taking us to Hungerford, Devizes, Bath and Bristol. This peaceful scene would once have been busy with canal boats taking goods, especially Bath stone, to Reading and London, together with agricultural goods and produce. This was the view in late October with the water vreflecting the golden foliage of the surrounding trees.
