The Viceroy butterfly is an interesting creature, mimicking the coloration of the Monarch butterfly almost perfectly as a protection against predators, primarily birds. As children, my brother and I were fascinated with butterflies, moths, and other insects and had many reference books about them. One Field Guide to Butterflies (if I remember the title correctly) was a well-loved, well-thumbed paperback handbook about North American butterflies. The page about the Viceroy stated that Viceroys took on the coloration of Monarchs because Monarchs are bitter and the birds avoid them; Viceroys apparently taste good to birds, so they evolved a coloration that protects them. A Dragonfly Salutes a Queen, watercolor batik on Ginwashi Rice Paper, by Conni Schaftenaar I drew the dragonflies and the Queen Anne's Lace flower with a Micron pen, then applied wax to protect those areas. After the wax was set, I went nuts with layers of purple and blue, adding some streaks of wax against each layer of color to create background grasses. Finally, I used the black Micron pen to offset the grasses and make them pop a little more, and in a couple of places I used a fun GellyRoll Glitter Pen.

Queen Anne's Lace Abstract with Wild Cowpeas, Watercolor Batik and Ink on Ginwashi Rice Paper, by Conni Schaftenaar. Part of my current focus on doing watercolor batik on rice paper, this Queen Annes Lace image is from a photo I took on my farm in West Michigan. I loved the little purple wild vetch or cowpea blossoms vining around the Queen! I drew the flower in Micron pen, then waxed the areas I wanted to preserve in white; then applied shades of blues and greens to run and play in the background. When that first glazing of color was dry, I applied more streaks and blobs of wax to simulate background grasses and stems, and applied another glaze of blues and greens to darken it further.
