Saito Dosan Mugs
Description: Ukiyo-e of Saito Dosan (斎藤道三) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, master of ukiyo-e style of Japanese woodblock prints, restored by Takeda Art. Depicting Dosan spying on Oda Nobunga in distance, to dertermine whether Nobunaga will make an acceptable son-in-law. Behind is the kamon of Saito clan, with calligraphy kanji of Saito Dosan, signature and seal of Kuniyoshi.
Description: The Saito clan (斎藤) was a Japanese samurai kin group from Echizen Province. The clan claimed descent from Fujiwara Toshihito. Saito Dosan (1494–1556) was the father-in-law of Oda Nobunaga. Dosan was attacked by his own son, Saito Yoshitatsu, and died in battle. Later, the son of Yoshitatsu, Tatsuoki was defeated by Oda Nobunaga in 1564, and the clan disappeared. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Saito clan, Ni-to nami (二頭波) or “Double head wave”. Below the crest is “Saito” in kanji.
