Description: This is an image of the castle on the tidal island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which sits off the coast of Northumberland. The island has had a turbulent past with raids by the Vikings and being in the volatile "Borders" region between England and Scotland. Access to the island is via a causeway that floods twice a day, so you have to time your visit accordingly. The approach to the castle is quite dramatic as the mound upon which it sits is the highest point on an otherwise very flat landscape. We were told that the rocky outcrop was all that remains of a long extinct volcano. Being so elevated, it offered a strategic advantage to those who might have defended it.
