Art by Duy Truong.................This is our first drawing in book seven of our Wurtherington Diary Series." Buffalo Bill and the Indians." Mark said he wanted to show me some magic tricks. I met him in his bedroom where he had it all set up. Of course I brought Cedric, Zeke, and Polly with me. He had a little stage set up and a banner that read, Mark the Magnificent. We all took a seat and he was quite amazing with the illusions. He was very insistent that he be called an illusionist which is a step up from being a magician. He did card tricks, mind reading, and then escaped from a pair of handcuffs. He saved his best trick for last when he disappeared in a puff of smoke and then walked in behind us through the door!

Art by Duy Truong............................Buffalo Bill Cody trotted out on Powder Face and waved to the cheering crowd. We watched many different acts that included reenactments of scenes from Buffalo Bill, the King of the Border Men. Ned Buntline announced many of the acts and acted as the master of ceremonies. The audience loved him. An actor playing Wild Bill Hickok came out and demonstrated his shooting abilities. He told the audience that guns were dangerous and should not be in the hands of children. Cody was clearly the star of the show when he talked about the loss of the true West while a stringed orchestra played behind him He said, "The Indians are the first Americans and we must do all we can for them."

He was a bit hesitant but soon was aboard Polly. We did a figure eight around the village and then sailed off for the Chiricahua mountains. I knew that much of this was familiar to him; however seeing it from the air would be a great experience for him. When we arrived, we settled to the grassy plain and I pointed to the posts that set the Southwest boundary. A sign said Chiricahua Reservation. I said, "You can see the post set here to mark your land. The Great White Chief has declared these lands off limits to whites. Any that are there now...

Art by Duy Truong...................General Oliver Howard opened the door. He said, "You may come in now." President Grant came out from behind his desk and greeted each of us. I could see that General Oliver Howard and Eli S. Parker had prepared him for my associates and he did well to hold back his astonishment at seeing talking animals for the first time (and probably his last). Alfred swept his hat across the carpet in a grand gesture. He said, "It is indeed a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President. I do thank you for meeting with us this afternoon."

Art by Duy Truong................................(Earlier) Zeke took me aside. He said, "I'm going next door and bring back magic dancing shoes." He gave me a wink and I caught on. We found a great pair of shoes and rushed back to the post office. Yep—these were enchanted shoes guaranteed to turn anyone into a dancing master. "Magic shoes!" Zeke polished them off with his sleeve and claimed he could feel the aura of the magic shoes. Tom put them on and walked around the room. "I can feel the magic!" he said. Cedric, Zeke, and Alfred began playing a waltz. I counted, "One, two, three, long, short, short," like Mrs. Prescott taught us at River Falls Elementary. I said, "The magic shoes are working. Look at Tom dance!"........................

He hired a photographer to take pictures of Pike, Wild Bill, and Cody and many others. All of these pictures would end up in his stories and make Wild Bill and Cody heroes of the West. We saw Ned Buntline get on that stage headed back to New York. He waved as he passed through the gate. "I'll have a book written about you before Christmas," he promised. "I'll send you a copy!" We sat with Wild Bill and Cody overlooking the prairie that stretched to the horizon. A buffalo herd bedded down for the night as the Sun sank low in the West. Off to the north a trio of Kiowa braves sat on mustangs gazing at the scarlet sun...

It was a cool, clear morn with a slight breeze that drifted ever so gently across the waters. A distant range of snow-capped mountaintops undulated and swelled like a line of long lost fairytale sandcastles. Princess Catherine ( the queen of the bees) gave us a warm welcome. No longer did she look at all like a bee. Her hair was now a golden honey that glistened spectacularly in the sunlight. She explained that she had important business with the bees to attend to after our meeting. "They are my little darlings. Not a day goes by without a crisis!"
