There is something eerie about shared stairwells, paradoxically familiar and alien. There is symbolism too, of ascent, windows with tantalizing glimpses of sky. I linger, alone with my breathing and my thoughts. From behind closed doors comes the sound of a voice in Hebrew, somewhere from Jerusalem perhaps, echoey, announcing ominous developments on the border. From another comes the bitter-sweet notes of the piano, from another place decades away. I smell food, fried onion perhaps, and freshly roasted coffee. I wanted to capture the scene. The work includes small elements of collage, and makes a wonderful addition to any collection.

In the stillness of the late afternoon evening twilight filters through the frosted glass of a Bauhaus window, warming my face. It feels timeless, or certainly as though the decades had somehow melted away and I was in the 1930s. Particles of dust float silently. From the various flats I hear muffled noises, the piercing beeps of the radio news on the hour, the sound of someone practising the piano, an animated mother daughter argument from further up the floors. The painting focuses on one landing, and what is below and above remains a mystery. The colours are muted, earthy, full of shadow and the windows a gentle play of soft colour. A perfect gift, a great addition to any collection of architecturally-themed work.

The stairwell of your decisions is sometimes confusing but still, the light is at the end of the tunnel after this darkness of confusing stairs.

St Botolph's Church is in Colchester, Essex. The present Church was dedicated in 1837. It was built in the style of the old Norman building, with semicircular arches and Norman ornamentation. The interior is reminiscent of the Georgian City churches. The three East windows came from Flanders. Samuel Harsnett, Archbishop of York in 1628, was born in the parish and is commemorated in the South wall Window. The Church was nearly destroyed by fire during the 1943 air raids. It had its own team of fire watchers which dealt with several incendiary bombs, although one fell on a radiator and the resulting fire was extinguished by the escaping water! The Barbican Estate was built between 1965 and 1976, on a site that had been bombed in World War II. The complex was designed by architects Chamberlin Powell and Bon, and was designed and built for City professionals and their families. The Barbican was such a large job for the firm they set up a sub-practice to deal with it!

a creepy skeleton meets you in a creepy stairwell

A long walk between stations took me, unaware, to this doorway in Montparnasse. I stopped, surprised and delighted by the open door to a little private world. I felt decades fade away. It is cool inside, and blissfully quiet too. Shadows gather in patches, ghostly domains of mystery. I dare not venture upstairs. I look at the retro signage, at the glass cabinets. I hear the faint mumble of French voices on a distant television, the sound of a piano. The scent of a meaty stew, and the tang of onion.
