If you are of a certain age, The Red Baron needs no introduction or explanation. If not, well, we're not talking about Baron von Richthofen, the renowned German World War I pilot. It was the '60s and over the top hot rods were all the rage. Looking for a follow-up to their very successful 'Beer Wagon' plastic model kit, Monogram's designer found it in a World War I German army helmet. Again, if you were around back then, it's not as weird as it sounds. German helmets were adopted as a sign of rebellion by bikers, surfers, and other cultural outlaws, so it made sense to build a hot rod model around one. Of course, like with the 'Beer Wagon' kit, a real-world version would materialize and just like the model, it too was an instant hit.

Mount Airy may be a spec of a town off of U.S. Route 52 in Surry County, North Carolina, but it was also home to one of the country's preeminent hot rod builders. Founded in 1980 by Donald 'Little Don' Perkins, his no billet policy ensured that he only produced traditional rods and customs, so no high tech styled, pastel heartbeat graphic, tweed interior, fenderless IFS rods here. Little Don may have only stood 5' 3" tall, but his builds were giants that are still prized possessions of those who own them well after he closed up shop and retired in 2015.

Based in Anaheim, Orange County Speed Shop opened its doors in 1949 as the post-war hot-rod craze was gaining momentum and quickly became one of the top sources for go-fast goodies on the west coast. They not only had a full-service retail business, but were quick to get into mail order and wholesale as well, distributing all the top brands to shops throughout the SoCal area.

After leaving the Army on a medical discharge in 1952, a 19-year-old Norm Grabowski built a hot rod based on a shortened 1922 Model T touring car mated to a similarly shortened Model A truck bed. With a powerful OHV engine from his parents' sedan, the vehicle that resulted had a unique appearance and stance, which inspired many hot rods created afterward. The car was first featured on the cover of the October 1955 issue of Hot Rod and then underwent further modifications, including a greater rake, tilted windshield and blue paint with flames. Grabowski's hugely influential hot rod became known as the 'Kookie Kar' after it was used in the television show 77 Sunset Strip, and driven by the character Kookie in just about every episode.

Larry and Mike Alexander, known as the “A Brothers,” reshaped the world of custom cars. From their humble shop in Detroit, they weaved a fresh fabric into the tapestry of American culture and elevated custom car design to new levels, all from the heart of the rust belt. Regarded as both fabricating geniuses and expert mechanics, the A Bros were arguably the most technically capable builders during the golden era of custom cars in the late 1950s and ‘60s. In fact, their technical acumen is how they broke into the big time and ended up restyling vehicles for the big three in Detroit.

An American Classic, 1923 T-Bucket Ford Hot-Rod. This was one of the many classic cars in Ocean City, MD for the annual OC Cruzers event.
