These lakeside spots are reached by taking the narrow western road which follows the edge of the lake. From here parking bays give access to woodland trails leading down to the shoreline. Thirlmere, created by the Manchester Corporation in the late 1800s as a water supply, is 3.5 miles long and is about 158 feet deep when full. The lake is part of Cumbria's Lake District.

Several parking places give access to woodland walks to the shore of the lake. This bridge is on one such walk near the southern end of the lake, crossing a small but torrential stream tumbling down the hillside. It's the sort of bridge that invites you to cross it - just to see where it leads!

Standing not far from the railway museum at Thirlmere in NSW, Australia, I had to stop & have a closer look. A great day of train chasing with Chris Randall & Steve Randall as we followed the steam train (starting from Central, Sydney) from Menangle Rd near Picton to Thirlmere & then this steam locomotive on the short trip to Buxton.
