This total eclipse will begin on the west coast of Greenland , then pass through the islands of Nunavut , reaching continental Canada where it will have its maximum. It will end up in the northern United States.

Its route will begin on the northern coast of Siberia ( Taimyr Peninsula , Laptev Sea ) with an initial direction from south to north. After a large loop across the Arctic Ocean , and closely touching the North Pole a few tens of km away (where the Sun will be 98.6% hidden), its direction will reverse due south crossing the northeast of the Greenland , to gradually move eastward and reach its maximum off the northwest coast of Iceland . Then, it will cross the North Atlantic to reach northern Spain in the local evening and finish at sunset in the Balearic Islands.

Perfect shirt for eclipse chasers.

This image was taken in Depoe Bay, OR on August 21, 2017. It had been clear the 3 days prior to the eclipse, but we woke up to a very overcast sky, there on the coast, the morning of the eclipse. I almost didn't set up my cameras, but finally did about an hour before the start. This was taken about a minute into totality, and was overexposed by 4 stops in order to capture the corona (sun's atmosphere). I feel very fortunate to get this shot, since the sky was still very hazy at the time. I have no idea if it would be have been different, had the sky been clear. Staying at home reduces the spread of corona

This image was taken in Depoe Bay, OR on August 21, 2017. To capture different aspects of the total eclipse, I set my cameras up for bracketed exposures, over and under exposing the images by 2 and 4 stops. To capture any Red Prominences (the bright, gaseous features extending outward from the Sun's surface, and into the Sun's corona) that might be visible, this image was underexposed by 2 stops. This underexposure allowed the camera to capture any of the bright prominences, at the expense of not being able to capture the less bright corona. In this image, taken seconds before the end of totality, you can see several prominences, most notably the one at 1 o'clock.

Shot in Depoe Bay, OR, on August 21, 2017, this image was taken just as totality ended. This view is the effect seen as the Moon passes by the Sun during a total solar eclipse, and the rugged lunar limb topography allows beads of sunlight to shine through in some places, and not in others. It is known as Baily's Beads, or the Diamond Ring effect.
