Lower Trestles, one of the most popular spots, is better-known due to the number of high-profile competitions and contests held there, but all sections are excellent for surfing. Trestles is hailed as one of the best beaches to surf because of the continuous swells, rocky reef and cobblestoned ocean bottom provided by the local watershed, San Mateo Creek, as well as the overall geography along the West Coast. Description: This is another of my continuing series of great places to surf on the west coast. SWAMI'S is a fantastic surf spot in Encinitas California. Swami's, also known as "Swamis", is an internationally known surfing spot, a point break located in Encinitas, California. Swami's was named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, because the grounds and hermitage of the Self-Realization Fellowship ashram, built in 1937, overlook this reef point. Access to Swami's is primarily by way of a small but well-appointed cliff top park, which has bathrooms, a water fountain, benches, picnic tables and a lawn under shade trees, as well as a small parking lot. Description: Measuring just fifty yards wide in some points, this fragile island was proclaimed America’s first National Seashore Park in the mid sixties. The jetties at the lighthouse were built just a few years later and are largely responsible for creating the icon’s resilient sandbars and reeling left-hander. Quickly gaining notoriety for its top level surf, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse began hosting ESA’s in 1971 and even hosted the US Surfing Championships in 1974 as well as in 1978 and 1982.
